Dubai has launched the ‘Our Flexible Summer’ initiative as the pilot scheme to improve work-life balance, enhance workplace flexibility and increase work productivity in its government entities. Thus, during the summer, from 12 August to 30 September, in 15 government entities the working hours will be reduced to 7 hours daily and work on Fridays will be entirely suspended.
Furthermore, the impact of reduced working hours and longer weekends on employees will be assessed since studies around the world have shown that lesser work hours increase the work productivity of the employees. Indeed, the neighbouring Emirate of Sharjah which has already a three-day weekend, reported 88% increase in productivity and 90% rise in job satisfaction due to the shorter work week. Moreover, also customers are happier, with a service satisfaction rate of 94%.
Overall, the Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) with this initiative aims to improve employees’ quality of life, hence increase Dubai’s competitiveness with advancing Dubai’s vision as the ideal city for a superior, but sustainable lifestyle.
